OPEN - Challenge #2 - NaPoWriMo

The March challenge will be closing tomorrow, but that makes way for April's challenge to begin!

Being that April is National Poetry Writing Month (NaPoWriMo.)  The challenge is to write one poem a day for the thirty days of April.  Rather than provide you with a separate challenge, we are embracing NaPoWriMo and I will be participating in it for the first time in a few years.  So, Challenge #2 will be to participate in NaPoWriMo.  I've created a Challenge 2 - NaPoWriMo folder which is now open for your submissions.  So, if you're going to attempt it, submit your NaPoWriMo poetry to that folder!

In order to provide some assistance, I've selected 30 prompts for the month of April.  You don't have to use these, but perhaps they can assist you with your participation in NaPoWriMo.  Enjoy!

Why do we watch as society justifies why they exclude?
While kids around the world die for lack of food
 
Why do we die fighting senseless wars?
When the outcome’s already decided behind closed doors
 
Why do we watch supposedly safe cities burn?
And dismiss it as casually as the Earth does turn
 
Why do we think health is only the size of our muscles?
The mind breaking down stuck in a permanent tussle
 
We can reach Mars, the depths of the oceans, and have a Moon landing
And yet with all our technology and effort, we can’t reach an understanding
 
Tell me why sport players hold so much clout
When it’s doctors and police officers we can’t do without
 
Why do we cry over a few dead in a car crash?
But shed no tears over those killed in a religion clash
 
Why do I watch my friends stress?

They say a true god is always correct in his ways

I’ve seen nothing of the supposed authority or the power
Even now as the rain pours down in the cloud’s cold shower
 
The beauty of this world before me I could plainly see
The sparkling blue of the water, the lush green of the tree
Brought a stark contrast to the depressing grey in which I flew
But I was to shed my skin, and arise anew
 
For every human is that Icarus in their own technique
Rising into the sky, taunting the Sun with their cheek

Just a FairytaleOnce upon a time, there was a beautiful planet called Astaria that was the jewel of the vast Medea galaxy.  The peaceful people who called Astaria home were the Anma Astari.  They took care of and treasured their planet, as well as acting as the guardians of the Medea galaxy.  For four millennia the Anma Astari watched over their corner of the universe, always keeping peace with the volatile Malì people of the planet Malicì.

Dry Spell   I am immobilized by time.
by the idea that it is somehow slipping,

  I am terrified by the incessant notion
that no combination of thoughts,

   could possibly satiate it.

I realize only now that it can never be filled:
     all which is tossed into it is swallowed in haste

I sit up in my bed,
Suddenly awake after twelve hours of sleep.
I rise out of the depth of my slumber
And begin my walk.

To the beat of my breathing,
I move my feet.
I can see others, in the distance,
Who have risen up in the night
To meet the rolling fog with their bared souls;
as they walk, shoeless on the paths of cobblestone.

I walk through the streets,
Breathing in the cool air.

their bliss just a facade
for twenty years plus five
they'd vowed before their God
to live and love and laugh
and build forevermore
they hired a household staff
had friends and wealth galore
but life behind the scenes
was filled with booze and sex
he said "it's in the genes"
she said "it's just complex"
the children shook their heads
now grown and on their own
from the time they were kids
ashamed of what was sown

LongingIt is far too lascivious and cruel,
the way the glint in
your unnerving stare commands me to come hither
yet your lips
keep pulsing with isolated, rigid greetings
like you were pushed to a dare of some sort.
But still, I know better
by the sometimes welling that form at
the corners of your eyes
- which you try your best to hide, and
by your ocean-deep sighs that
your longing goes past your matting lashes
and mascara tinted tears.

It is never easy, hiding
everything I desire inside of little words
like "Hello" and "Goodbye" when

Intense glares
Of bitter intolerance

The poetry challenge seems intriguing. I was looking at the already submitted works and I see various definitions of what poetry is to everyone. I believe there is no right answer, as the answer could be as varied as the forms of poetry itself. However, I believe that the winner will be the one who best displays his knowledge of vocation and shows a creative edge when writing. I do not know if I have what it takes, however, the challenge itself is something that is most assuredly entertaining and so I will toss my hat into the ring!

It isn't like a contest where there is going to be a "winner" per se. It's a challenge to produce work, and on something as subjective as what poetry really is, there is no right or wrong answer, as you stated. It's a challenge to create something different, and to truly inspect what you believe poetry to be.

exactly. I may have misstated in my post before. There can never be a true "winner" in the art of poetry. I honestly look forward to the creative minds and the art they create for this contest. i'm trying to do a piece for my entry, yet I feel I may not have it entered in time due to my job and personal life. But try I will ^^
